The Most Violent Thing @ Republic Gallery

What sort of images would appear in an exhibition with the title The Most Violent Thing? Perhaps images of war, disaster, death, torture. This exhibition contains no image of overt violence. Instead, it seeks to explore the possibility that, as Slavoj Žižek put it, "Sometimes doing nothing is the most violent thing to do." The Most Violent Thing presents a group of works that places a demand on the viewer: that she do nothing. In our current state of "react now, think later" (or think never), it is only in slowing down and taking the time necessary to do nothing that one can recognize the false urgency of our moment. And, so the argument goes, only then can the current order of things be overturned - the most violent thing of all.

Featuring the work of Associate Professor Marian Penner Bancroft; Rose Bouthillier (07), Blaine Campbell (07), Scott Rudd, Carol Sawyer (Sessional faculty), Mohamed Somani and Hamed Teymouri.
