Call for Papers
Deadline: 4:30pm January 30, 2009
Writing/Art: The Emily Carr University Student Symposium

The inaugural Emily Carr Student Symposium: Writing/Art will take place on March 5 and 6, 2009. We are inviting college and university students from the Greater Vancouver area to submit papers that investigate visual culture in creative and innovative ways.

This symposium will explore a variety of approaches to writing about cultural texts, from paintings and sculptures to Hollywood movies and bottles of dish soap. It will demonstrate diverse perspectives on art and culture and the ways in which theory is used to write about visual culture. This symposium will expose these kinds of writing and ideas to a community of peers, both inside and outside our institution.

Possible topics of exploration might include:
-How does a social issue surrounding an historical artwork continue to manifest itself in contemporary culture?
-How can canonized works of art be re-interpreted or problematized?
-What does looking at an object through a particular lens or methodology (i.e. Marxist, feminist, etc.) reveal about the social context in which it was made?
-How does a particular exhibition/event/etc. construct meaning for its public?

Submissions should be no longer than ten pages or roughly 2500 words.
