Emily Carr University of Art + Design is proud to announce that Judson Beaumont (85) and Robert Johnston (98) are recipients of the 2009 BC Creative Achievement Awards for furniture design, and industrial design, respectively.

The awards took place Monday, September 21, and were presented by Premier Gordon Campbell and Keith Mitchell, Chair, British Columbia Achievement Foundation (and former Emily Carr Board of Governor Chair).

Inspired by kids and their liberal acceptance of the bizarre, Judson is widely known for creating whimsical, imaginative and masterful furniture pieces. Since graduating from Emily Carr in 1985, Judson has been producing one-of-a-kind, interactive designs from his custom design studio, Straight Line Designs Inc. His company has completed unique design projects and installations throughout North America and around the world, including pieces for children's hospitals, museums, libraries, Disney Cruise ships and various exhibitions. His most recent initiative centers around his designs and products utilizing wood from BC's mountain pine beetle forests, thus taking an under-utilized raw material and creating beautiful and unique value-added wood pieces.

Striving to develop designs that bridge the gap between users and technology, Robert creates compelling and engaging products and experiences through a strategic balance of business, science and art. Since graduating from the Industrial Design program at Emily Carr in 1998, Robert has worked on a diverse range of innovative and award-winning projects in a variety of mediums, including consumer products, equipment packaging and environments. Robert is a strong advocate for the promotion of industrial design in BC and is an active member of the BC Industrial Design Association. In 2006, he founded Tangram Design with the goal of creating products and experiences that are compelling for people to engage with but are also profitable for BC Companies to produce.

Congratulations!
