Franz Kafkas The Hunger Artist

description

Project | A complex typography project highlighting a short story, The Hunger Artist, written by Franz Kafka. The objective was to create a large-sized, multi-page folio by combining both narrative text and expressive display type to tell a story.

Approach |  After my initial research I decided to use three different typefaces. Adobe Jenson (body copy), Eames Century Modern (sub-titles), and Akzidenz Grotesque (Bold titles). Eames is subtly used and complements Abobe Jenson as serif typeface indicative of the style of Franza Kafka. Both typefaces are heavier in weight, as I wanted to convey the mood felt when seeing the Hunger Artist in his cage. Akzidenz Grotesque, a sans-serif, is quite bold, very ledgible and striking. I kept the colour to a minimum, adding flashes of red in contrast with a dark grey and black.
