Chinese Scholar's Rock Inspired Lamp design

description

Inspiration

Chinese Scholar’s Rocks are small shaped or naturally occurring rocks appreciated by Chinese scholars and quite frequently found in traditional Chinese gardens. There is a set of four principal aesthetic qualities for the rocks had emerged consisting of thinness, openness, perforations and wrinkling.

This lamp is inspired by the four principals of Chinese Scholar’s Rocks. The holes of many sizes and directions on the surface create negative space and infinite depth. Not only the contour lines of the outside but also the forms within make the product vivid and interesting.

 Design

The lamp is designed in a broken egg shape and hollow inside which is organic and imperfect instead of a nice complete ellipse. The patters on the exterior are inspired by the Chinese paper cutting elements. It is a combination between nature and culture, modern and tradition. Both positive shape and negative shape construct this lamp; the idea of Ying and Yang is well concerned in this product.

 Use

The lamp could use as a table lamp, a bed lamp or a droplight. The shadow reflects on the wall create the patterns in a different way which gives a special and unique mystery feeling.

Second year core project in fall 2011.
