Emotional Space

description

The design problem solved through this project involved evoking a "confused" feeling in an audience by creating a space suitable for one person to stand within. Although the colouring and angles of the walls and tubes serve multiple purposes, our main goal for the project was to play with light. The structure is meant to stand in a dark area, with one main source of bright light entering the top of the piece. The only entrance of light which penetrate the inside must first pass through the tubes around the sides, or the top cubic form. The top piece and the tubes are coloured brightly so that when light passes through, it will reflect off the brightened surfaces to the interior white walls. Thus, the walls will be coloured from the reflections of the tubes and top, forcing the observer to question the source of colour, and feel a little confused with the simplicity of it.

Although the project was a cumulative endeavour involving two other designers, my specific place in the creation of our space was in creating the original prototypes, and designing the tubes which extended through the walls of the main structure. The cardboard tubes were cut into specific curved and conical shapes which allowed for easy disassembling, flexibility and durability.
