LUCE (a light-up carrying equipment)

The objective of this project was to design a man-machine interaction product with the Lego Mindstorm Kit. This backpack has been designed with a light sensor at the top of the backpack which senses darkness and a flashlight on the strap to help users see their way in the dark. A series of blinking button lights along the sides of the backpack alert drivers as the backpack user crosses the street. A touch sensor at the bottom of the pack detects whether the backpack is been used or not; it turns off the lights if the backpack is not being used. The main target users of this product are children from ages 7 to 12 in elementary school. The initial idea was to design a wearable product that suits children's needs and provides safety for children walking home from school in low light conditions. The final prototype shows not only the function and the interactivity of the backpack, but also showcases the aesthetic design and the sustainability of this light-up carrying equipment.
