AHIS 325 F002: Studies in Modern Art
This course focuses on Modernist and Avant-Garde artistic practice in the 20th century. Students will investigate artists and their diverse aesthetic strategies especially as they reflect the powerful political and cultural changes that transformed social and artistic tradition.

Art Perry is an Associate Professor in Critical and Cultural Studies. His writing and photography involves global cultures disrupted by political, economic or religious change. Over a five-year period he traveled to the Himalayan Tibetan Buddhist communities of Tibet, India and Nepal. The result was his Penguin Putnam publication, The Tibetans. In 2000, this book was awarded the $50,000 Roloff Beny Photographic Book Award. The same year The Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC, acquired a portfolio of his photographs for its collection. Currently he is working on a digital projection/installation with Luca Ruzza of Rome University, as well as a research project dealing with the effects of global working on Greenland’s Inuit communities.
