MHIS 230 S001: Histories + Theories of Photo
This course is an introduction to the history of photography: photography as a set of technological inventions, as a widely embraced social phenomenon and as a field of intellectual and philosophical discourse. Students will become aware of advances in photographic technologies since the middle of the nineteenth century as well as variations in aesthetics and the desire to document. Students will learn about the relationship of photography to industry, to emerging social sciences, police records and other disciplinary structures, and will consider how these social relations have evolved, expanded and been theorized through the uses and application of photography today.

Chris's research interests extend from the histories of the image as an aesthetic, political, and epistemological discourse. He writes and lectures on the concept of methodology in art as a step toward a non-disciplinary epistemology that recognizes art knowledge.
Chris's art practice is rooted in photography. Addressing the medium as a primary form of technical image-making, he explores its inherent questions about time and space by composing performative lectures that guide audiences through a sequence of "deep-res" pictures. Vignettes of video, music, and spoken word are combined in a narrative form that appeals to poem, essay, and film. His work has been exhibited internationally.
Previously, Chris served as the Director of the Jake Kerr Faculty of Graduate Studies. In 2010, he led the implementation of Emily Carr's Low Residency Masters program.
