NMSA 315: Decolonial New Media

This studio course will engage students of all backgrounds in considering the intersections of Indigenous art history, decolonial thinking and new media practices. Students will contextualize Indigenous new media from the 1990s to the present day and will explore digital storytelling methods and new media theory while developing an understanding of decolonial perspectives and practices. Students will cultivate and put into practice a set of skills for analyzing, comparing, researching and writing about new media, and explore the ongoing use of technology by Indigenous artists as vehicles of resilience, empowerment and cultural continuity. Through project-based work and classroom discussions students develop critical perspectives, theoretical frameworks, and applied skills.
