PNTG 210 SU01: Thinking Through Painting
This studio course introduces students to conceptual, non-objective, and process-based painting practice and discourse through directed projects. Assignments explore contemporary and historical precedents within the discipline of experimental painting, including processes of collage, abstraction, and the use of non-traditional materials. Through this course, students will gain knowledge of the multiplicity of approaches to constructing a painting and the rich historical development of painting practices. Classes combine discussions, readings, demonstrations, and individual and group critiques.

Rebecca Brewer was born in Tokyo, raised in Vancouver.
An interdisciplinary artist, her practice most recently includes painting, textiles and print media. She completed her MFA in Painting at Bard College, NY, in 2012. Recent exhibitions include Entangled at the Vancouver Art Gallery and The Holding Sky at Catriona Jeffries Gallery. Brewer was the 2011 national winner of the RBC Canadian Painting Competition.
