The (Il)legal Artist: A Collective Examination of Making Art Public
You can either ask for permission now or ask for forgiveness later. Choosing between creating sanctioned and non-sanctioned artwork in public spaces can force us to interrogate our risk tolerance, artistic vision, and collaborative skills. Whether installing a temporary intervention or negotiating a commissioned mural, there are legal implications and negotiations that artists need to consider. This presentation will introduce topics such as contract negotiation, potential legal consequences, and preserving your moral and constitutional rights.
Artist as Thief and Target: Navigating the Canadian Copyright System
Good artists borrow. Great artists steal. Is it creative appropriation or illegal counterfeiting when we work from other sources?
As artists, we are interested in having the most flexibility possible in drawing creatively from existing material, and yet, we are also interested in having our own work protected under the law. This presentation will explore the ins and outs of the Canadian copyright system, best practices for utilizing appropriated material in your work, and a range of options for sharing, distributing, and protecting your artwork.
Speaker Danielle Sabelli is the Co-founder of Broken City Lab, an artist-led interdisciplinary artist collective and non-profit organization, in addition to practicing law.
