Our resilience as a University involves being as prepared as possible for any emergency or disaster that we are faced with. In order to do so, our community have to know their roles and responsibilities when faced with an emergency.

At Work

Drop, Cover & Hold On! If we experience an earthquake while on campus, try and do the following:

  • drop to the ground and take cover under a desk
  • hold on to the desk to stop it from moving as you’re trying to protect yourself from falling debris
  • if in a hallway, try and get to an interior wall or stairwell, drop to the ground and protect your head
  • try and stay away from doorways and windows (breaking glass)
  • do not try to exit the building as falling debris will cause injury
  • wait for aftershocks

Supplies

The University has emergency supplies such as portable first aid kits, food, water and emergency blankets available should they be needed, as well as emergency response kits for fire wardens. In an emergency, patience is the name of the game, as chaos will be front and centre in the immediate aftermath.

Building evacuations can occur for a number of reasons, from fire alarms being activated, to smoke in a building, loss of power or some other emergent situation.

Where do I go once I've evacuated the building?

The plaza at the South West side of the building - the area near the Nemesis patio and parkade elevator.

Alternatively, the Wilson Arts Plaza at the South East side of campus.

When can I re-enter the building?

When Facilities or Security indicate it is safe to do so. Do not re-enter when the alarm bells are turned off, other work may be needed to complete an all clear.

What to do in the event of an alarm?

If you hear an alarm bell, this means that the building must be evacuated. Calmly head to an exit. Fire Wardens will direct you where to go.

Where do I go once I've evacuated the building?

Fire Wardens will direct you where to go: the plaza at the South West side of the building - the area near the Nemesis patio and parkade elevator.

Alternatively, the Wilson Arts Plaza at the South East side of campus.

Do not return to the building until the all clear has been given by Facilities or Security.

Tips

  • alarms are not always activated because of fire, so do not wait until you see flames
  • always treat alarms as real
  • do not finish a phone call or something you’re working on, leave immediately
  • close doors behind you
  • if you are teaching a class, ensure all students leave try and evacuate as a group to the muster area
  • if you see anyone not leaving, notify a fire warden so they can notify the fire department upon arrival

What if I see a fire?

If you observe a fire, notify Security immediately. You can also pull a fire alarm pull station to alarm the bells and evacuate the building.

Do not try to put it out, unless you are 100% comfortable using a fire extinguisher. If you do try to extinguish a fire, always make sure you’ve cleared the area and are exit side of a fire. Do not get trapped between the fire and exit door.

Remember, YOUR safety is more important than property or equipment. Always keep this in mind in emergencies and err on the side of caution.

Duties of Fire Wardens during a fire alarm

Advise all persons to evacuate to the Muster Area located at the South West Side of the University. Take any action necessary to prevent panic.

  1. Check that all doors are closed in your evacuation area.
  2. Help persons with mobile difficulties and only if necessary go to the exit stairwell, being mindful of not impeding the egress of other occupants.
  3. Report to the Manager - Safety , Security & Emergency Management the location of any disabled persons awaiting evacuation and the location of others not evacuated.
  4. Report to the Manager - Safety , Security & Emergency Management the location of hazardous materials, equipment or processes.
  5. When the evacuation has been completed, the Fire Wardens shall proceed to their assigned post and await instructions from the Manager - Safety , Security & Emergency Management.
  6. Advise persons not to enter the building until notified by the Manager - Safety , Security & Emergency Management.
  7. Complete evacuation report and send to Manager - Safety , Security & Emergency Management
