Dianne is passionate about design and business. She has extensive experience in corporate and retail industries, bringing strong leadership skills and deep knowledge of brand development, communications and marketing to a wide range of clients that include Barrick Gold, FoodSpect Technologies, Labatt Breweries, MEC, the Richard Ivey School of Business, Royal Bank of Canada, the Toronto Blue Jays, the Toronto General and Western Hospital Foundation, and the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre.Dianne has worked with a number of award-winning design firms, agencies and in-house teams as Design Lead and Art Director. She has taught part-time at Emily Carr University of Art and Design, and at York|Sheridan in the Bachelor of Design program. She is a professional member of the Graphic Designers of Canada (CGD), has served on the Board for the Association of Registered Graphic Designers of Ontario (RGD) and the Examination Board for Registered Graphic Designers. She is a certified member of the Graphic Designers of Canada (GDC) and an active member of the Vancouver Modern Quilt Guild (VMQG).

Gabriel Wong is a graphic designer and educator. He is a second-generation Canadian from Edmonton, Alberta. He has worked as an independent design practitioner for over a decade.
His professional work focuses on the arts and international development, from working with contemporary dance companies to UNEP's CITES. His work has been recognized by Communication Arts and American Illustration and is included in Edmonton and Fort McMurray's Public Art Collection.
He received his Bachelor's in Visual Communication Design from the University of Alberta and Master's of Arts in Environmental Art from Aalto University in Helsinki, Finland. He has also studied graphic design and comics (bande dessinée) at École Recherche Graphique in Brussels, Belgium.
He is interested in pedagogy, design and writing systems and international perspectives.

Casey Hrynkow, FGDC, CGD is Senior Design Strategist at Ion Brand Design in Vancouver. Before joining Ion in April 2015, she was a principal of Herrainco Brand Strategy + Design, a strategic branding firm working with corporate, First Nations and not-for-profit organizations for over 35 years. Casey facilitates brand definition for clients and manages branding projects.
She was made a Fellow of the Socity of Graphic Designers of Canada in 2011. She served as Chair for the advisory committee to Kwantlen University College's degree-based design program and is a Sessional Instructor at Emily Carr University of Art + Design. She earned a B.Des. in Communication Design from Emily Carr and completed the Leading by Design program at California College of the Arts in San Francisco, earning a Certifiicate in Innovation Leadership in 2013.
She is completing her MA in Liberal Studies at spring 2019. Her research thesis looks at how design research and design thinking methods might help shift public perceptions of homelessness.

Laura Kozak is a design researcher, educator, and community organizer. Her work focuses on relational, place-based ethics, and asks how designers contribute to relationships with communities, land, water and ecological beings through decolonizing and anti-oppression practices.
Laura has taught across every level at Emily Carr, from the Summer Institute for Teens through to Graduate studios and supervision. An affiliate of the DESIS Lab, she has supervised numerous Research Assistants and served as a mentor to students in the Social Practice and Community Engagement program. In 2021 she was honoured to receive the Ian Wallace Award for Teaching Excellence and recognized by Sierra Club BC for Exceptional Leadership in Climate Action.
Her research is focused on climate justice, which integrates ethics of social justice and decolonization into climate action and sustainability work. In 2023, she co-led a Climate Justice Field School for senior sustainability planners and policy-makers at the City of Vancouver in collaboration with a renowned group of cultural and social justice practitioners. Currently, she is part of an interdisciplinary team (with Jean Chisholm and Marcia Higuchi) working with Robert Joe, Elder-in-Residence at kálax-ay (Capilano University) and Coast Salish Master Weaver Jess Silvey on a project called Mapping swiya, which draws on shíshálh ways of knowing to re-envision stories of time and place.
Laura has published and presented papers internationally at PDC2020 (Participatory Design Conference), PIVOT: A World of Many Centers, Cumulus, AICAD and ServDes. She is a past president of 221A Artist Run Centre Society and current Research Associate and Sessional Faculty at Emily Carr. Laura holds a Master of Advanced Studies in Architecture from UBC and a BFA from Emily Carr.

Robin Mitchell Cranfield is an illustrator and graphic designer specializing in illustrated books. Her studio specializes in fine book design for contemporary art galleries and for children.
Robin is the co-creator of the Windy series. In 2023 she released her fifth book for children, Wings, Waves, and Webs: Patterns in Nature with Greystone.
Robin’s work has been recognized by the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), Kidscreen awards, and BolognaRagazzi. She holds a BDes from Emily Carr University and an MA in English, specializing in Print Culture, from Simon Fraser University.

Elizabeth MacKenzie's work has been characterized by an interest in maternal ambivalence, monstrous bodies, interrogations of portraiture and considerations of the complexity of familial and other interpersonal relations. Her site-specific drawing installations have been shown across Canada including exhibitions at the Mount Saint Vincent Art Gallery (Halifax), the Agnes Etherington Art Centre (Kingston), the Glenbow Museum (Calgary), the Mackenzie Art Gallery (Regina), the Burnaby Art Gallery and the Vancouver Art Gallery. She maintains an ongoing commitment to collaborative and community-engaged practices, critical writing and teaching.

Tarique Qayumi was born in Kabul, Afghanistan. He escaped Afghanistan with his mother on the back of a truck as a refugee when he was a child. He's part of this year's cohort for the Warner x Academy Directing Program and a mentor at the Whistler Film Festival Screenwriting Lab.
After completing his MFA in film at UCLA, TOLO TV, Afghanistan's largest TV station, approached Qayumi. He directed "Truth Unveiled," Afghanistan's first docudrama series; "The Defenders," a drama miniseries; and the Afghan version of "Sesame Street," seasons two and three. His first feature film, "Targeting," won Best Film at the Afghan Human Rights Festival in Kabul in 2015.
"Black Kite," a historical drama, his second feature, which he wrote, directed, edited, and cinematographed, premiered at TIFF in 2017, screened at 20 festivals worldwide and won three Leo Awards: Best Writer, Best Direction, and Best Picture. It was sold to Amazon Studios.
Currently, he has completed his third feature with financing from Telefilm entitled, "MÂDAR," which is on the festival circuit.

Annie Briard investigates visual perception paradigms through video, photography and installation. Her work has been presented in solo exhibitions and public art projects across Canada as well as group shows, festivals and fairs internationally, including at the Vancouver Art Gallery, Joyce Yahouda Gallery (Montreal), Three Shadows Photography Centre (Beijing), the Lincoln Film Centre New York (NYC), Matadero Madrid, and the Switzerland Architecture Museum (Basel). She has been awarded residencies in New York City, Spain and at the Banff Centre, among others, and is the recipient of grants from the Canada Council for the Arts, the British Columbia Arts Council and the Canadian Social Science and Humanities Research Council. Annie Briard holds a BFA from Concordia University and an MFA from Emily Carr University of Art + Design where she teaches and manages public engagement for the Audain Faculty of Art. She has previously led NPOs including CARFAC BC and Studio XX.

SOCS 411: Professional Practice
This senior-level, social science course is intended to prepare students for professional and further educational opportunities after graduation. The student gains practical and critical, conceptual and theoretical skills. Topics include: project management, business formations, the fundamentals of proposals and contracts, intellectual property and the complexities of authorship, budgets and financial administration, the market planning process within the private and public sectors, and the social role of the artist or designer. Larger societal constructs are examined as well as assumptions about the nature of professional practice research and discourse.
