Jean Chisholm (BA, BDes, MDes) is a designer, researcher, and educator. Her research explores place-based and community collaborations that work towards relational, ecological and equitable ways of living. She approaches this work through collegial labour practices and collaborations with artists, designers and community organizers who hold local and Indigenous knowledge of their communities. Most recently, Jean convened the Place-Based Field School and social practice course Practicing Neighbourly Responsibility with Laura Kozak. She has multiple years of experience as a graphic designer and art director, designing and overseeing production for printed, spatial, and digital touch points. Jean currently works at Emily Carr University of Art + Design as an instructor, Faculty Association coordinator, and research associate with the Health Design Lab and Living Labs.

Laura Kozak is a design researcher, educator, and community organizer. Her work focuses on relational, place-based ethics, and asks how designers contribute to relationships with communities, land, water and ecological beings through decolonizing and anti-oppression practices.
Laura has taught across every level at Emily Carr, from the Summer Institute for Teens through to Graduate studios and supervision. An affiliate of the DESIS Lab, she has supervised numerous Research Assistants and served as a mentor to students in the Social Practice and Community Engagement program. In 2021 she was honoured to receive the Ian Wallace Award for Teaching Excellence and recognized by Sierra Club BC for Exceptional Leadership in Climate Action.
Her research is focused on climate justice, which integrates ethics of social justice and decolonization into climate action and sustainability work. In 2023, she co-led a Climate Justice Field School for senior sustainability planners and policy-makers at the City of Vancouver in collaboration with a renowned group of cultural and social justice practitioners. Currently, she is part of an interdisciplinary team (with Jean Chisholm and Marcia Higuchi) working with Robert Joe, Elder-in-Residence at kálax-ay (Capilano University) and Coast Salish Master Weaver Jess Silvey on a project called Mapping swiya, which draws on shíshálh ways of knowing to re-envision stories of time and place.
Laura has published and presented papers internationally at PDC2020 (Participatory Design Conference), PIVOT: A World of Many Centers, Cumulus, AICAD and ServDes. She is a past president of 221A Artist Run Centre Society and current Research Associate and Sessional Faculty at Emily Carr. Laura holds a Master of Advanced Studies in Architecture from UBC and a BFA from Emily Carr.

Magnolia Pauker, PhD Candidate, The Social Justice Institute, UBC + PhD(ABD), Philosophy, Media and Communications, The European Graduate School
Magnolia is lecturer in Critical and Cultural Studies at ECUAD on the unceded Coast Salish territories also known as Vancouver, Canada. Currently writing her dissertation entitled, “Philosophy as Radical Journalism: The Public Intellectual and The Rise of the Philosopher Journalist,” her practice takes up the philosophical interview as a model for critical engagement, knowledge production, and pedagogy. Sketching the contours of philosophy, cultural studies, and journalism, she is committed to working in response to the contemporary. In her ongoing dedication to learning in public, she co-facilitates a feminist free school with Randy Lee Cutler, Pleasure + Protest, Sometimes Simultaneously! Magnolia is co-editor of InterViews in Performance Philosophy: Crossings and Conversations, a collection of original essays and interviews with Judith Butler, Alphonso Lingis, Catharine Malabou, Avital Ronell, and others (Palgrave Macmillan 2017).
