This course builds on the tools learned in MHIS 205 Reading the Screen by introducing students to various theoretical perspectives that may include authorship, ideology, cultural representation, gender, classical film theory, and interpretative methodologies such as psychoanalysis, semiotics, and historicism. In addition to preparing students for subsequent more specialized courses, Reading Media culture examines the relationship between media work and the social context in which it is created in order to foster a greater critical and cultural awareness of contemporary and historical media culture. Students attend both a screening and a lecture.
