The Moccasin Project

Posted: Mon, 2016-01-04 15:44

Please join us as we present an exhibition showcasing beautiful moccasins created by the Emily Carr University community. This year-long initiative invited staff, faculty and Aboriginal students to participate in a Moccasin making workshop. Through demonstrations, videos and guest artists, participants were shown how to design and sew their own pair of moccasins. Beadwork was a new challenge for most, and one that was eagerly met by these first time beaders.

The pre-cut Elk hide templates and other supplies were supplied and organized by the Aboriginal Gathering Place and held weekly drop in times. It was a wonderful opportunity for staff and faculty across disciplines and departments to interact and engage with each other and our Aboriginal students.

Camrose Ducote grew up in Colorado and the light and space of Colorado continue to influence her work. She works in layers, creating then obscuring, revealing then hiding. Using thin layers of tinted acrylic medium she builds up the surface. “Sanding, squeegeeing, scraping is my idea of drawing. Creating ‘gel skins’, dripping, spraying, spreading medium with the palette knife is my way of painting.”

“I’ve introduced Gold & Silver foil adding another element along with the ink in these new works. There is something incredibly freeing working with ink... I’m in the moment, the works are energetic and spontaneous allowing my intuitive inspiration to flow through me, expressed through quick gestural strokes from ink beaker onto paper. It is one of the most freeing feelings to trust what will flow when you allow it."
