You’ve finally made it to Emily Carr University of Art + Design(ECU), but navigating a new campus, class schedules, and more can be challenging. We’ve got you covered with our guide to a successful first week on campus.

Get ready to meet your new friends

Making friends happens fast during the first week at ECU. From participating in the Welcome Week, long lineups in the Caf, to bonding over shared passions in class, there are plenty of ways to connect and find your people. Check out the Students’ Union website for more updates on Clubs Day and other mixers and meet-up events. Don’t be shy - everyone’s new here, and community is a huge part of ECU!

Learn about all the tech tools for the year

From signing up for your OneCard to your class schedule, now’s the time to make your tech set you up for success. Make it an informal tour of the second level of the building – first stop is the Student Commons (RM B2110) to pick up your OneCard, pay tuition and more. Next is the Facilities office (RM2354) to grab a parking pass or get your locker set up. Then head downstairs to the ITS office (RM 1116) to troubleshoot any tech problems and set up your digital wallet account to pay for campus services.

Inspiration is everywhere you look

If you’re wandering through the hallways, be sure to soak in all the fantastic artwork and design projects from the Foundation Show around you. Like you, the Foundation students started out as fledgling beginners but have now found their pathways to their chosen art practice and you will too! If you want to explore the local art scene, follow Gallery Go on Instagram where students go to exhibitions and screenings in the neighbourhood.

Look for support

If it’s overwhelming at first, the Counselling + Wellness team are here to help with ongoing programming throughout the first week and throughout the semester. From dog therapy, individual counselling sessions and an opportunity to make food together at the Wellness Kitchen, the team is here to help you navigate any challenges you’re going through. Don’t hesitate to get in touch with them at any time: counselling@ecuad.ca

Go for a wander

Your first few days will involve figuring out where everything is. On the fourth floor, you'll find the DOC for all your printing needs, along with the Graduate Studies office, Soft Shop, and more. The third floor hosts the Design Wood Shop for furniture and prototyping, the Foundation Shop, the Communication Design Studio, and other facilities. The second and main level is bustling with the Libby Leshgold Gallery, Michael O’Brien Commons, the Caf, Library, and Student Services office. The lower floor offers a ramen shop at Tuck Shop, IT Services for tech help, Media Resources Centre, Tool Checkout, and additional services. Keep this campus map bookmarked as you explore the campus.

Don’t worry, it takes time to get used to all the new features of campus but you’ll find your groove soon enough. You’re officially part of the ECU community.

Welcome to Emily Carr University!
