Jackie Heslop has a Ph.D. in English (Critical Theory) from the University of Victoria; her PhD dissertation traced ideologies of subject formation from the German Enlightenment through their persistent resonance in various discourses of subjectification, including the pedagogical. She has published and presented papers on postmodernism, film theory, pedagogy, and academic freedom, as well as on modern literature. Broadly speaking, her academic interests are with the politics of humanist ideology and identity formation as they intersect with a variety of social and cultural issues. She teaches various English classes -- from composition to critical theory, film theory, and cultural studies -- and in all her classes encourages active engagement with ideas as she believes that critical thinking is the most valuable skill students can learn.
