Katherine Gillieson
Bio
Katherine is active in research, writing and practice in addition to teaching and graduate supervision. Some of her interests include the language of book design and diagrammatic representation, symmetries and visual order in different socio-cultural contexts, and the theory and the philosophy of design.
Over 2015 and 2016 she led the Mapping the Curriculum, a research project aimed at using design methods to examine structures at Emily Carr, leading to current work on interdisciplinarity for practice-based research. In 2016 she co-organized Information+, an international conference, workshop and exhibition on information design and visualization (with I. Meirelles, OCADU). She has also conducted grant-funded work and studio courses around design for 'fuzzy messes' embodied by environmental issues.
Katherine joined Emily Carr in 2013 after many years in the UK, where she worked in the Department of Typography & Graphic Communication at the University of Reading.
