Hayley Carruthers
Bio
Hayley Carruthers is an artist originally from Moh’kinsstis (Calgary). She currently lives, makes, and teaches on the unceded territories of the Coast Salish Peoples, which includes the territories of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), Stó:lō and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations.
Hayley works across different mediums but primarily in drawing and screenprinting. Her art practice takes a speculative approach to reflecting on subjective experiences of mental imagery, perception, and other neural phenomena. She is interested in the macro and the micro, ambiguity and the unknown. She approaches drawing and printmaking as mediums of transmutation and making as means of thinking, learning, and questioning without having to find an answer.
Hayley holds a BFA with distinction from the University of Calgary (2017) and a MFA from Emily Carr University of Art and Design (2020).
