The high value we associate with our time is what makes it difficult to explore “wasting” it—also why we split our attention between so many influences, to avoid at all costs any wasted time. It then becomes necessary to actively appreciate the value and importance of rituals, behaviors that strengthen over time, and develop personal formulas for mental discipline—what ratio of time spent “consuming” versus time spent contemplating promotes optimal functioning and richness of thought.

Ritualizing any behavior makes space for reflexivity in thinking. Writing thoughts and life reflection on paper then burning them has no direct value, but the act of doing and time it takes to do it opens a space for internal dialogue to happen, allowing the mind time to address thoughts individually and with purpose.
