Lauren Marsden is a Trinidadian-Canadian artist, teacher, and editor. Her work studies the nature of performance and explores the ways a performative act can be documented and re-circulated, often in relation to contentious and complex sites and landscapes. She experiments with directorial and script-writing techniques that interweave performance and site, allowing one to inform the other within the production of films, videos, gifs, and photographs. At the core of her practice is a fascination with collaboration and improvisation across disciplines, and she has worked with many creative professionals, including actors, dancers, voice artists, costume makers, a court illustrator, a police sketch artist­, and an auctioneer. She has presented her work at galleries and film festivals in Canada, the United States, Italy, Mexico, and Trinidad & Tobago. She holds an MFA from the California College of the Arts and currently teaches at Simon Fraser University and Emily Carr University of Art + Design in the fields of media arts, performance art, and critical writing. She is the editor of Decoy Magazine, an arts publication based in Vancouver, BC. 

Born and raised in Germany, Birthe moved to Canada in 2005 after receiving her MFA from the University of Essen in Communication Design and Photography.

Birthe’s art practice explores the relationship between memory and identity, with a special interest in the topic of female identity and its representation in our society. Her main focus is photography but she also utilizes other art forms like installation, sculpture and collage to investigate to what degree our complex identities can be visualized.

Her work has been exhibited internationally, in both solo and group shows, and is featured in many private and public collections such as the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago and the Museum of Applied Arts in Gera, Germany.

Birthe's project The Idea of North won the Critical Mass Book Award 2009, and was published as a monograph in 2011. Her most recent work, Abendlied, received the Edward Burtynsky Grant in 2018 and was published in April 2019. Birthe is a member of the Piece of Cake Project.

Lorelei Pepi is an internationally award-winning independent animation filmmaker living in Vancouver, BC, and just recently landed to join the Animation Dept here at Emily Carr. Her work engages with issues of political and historical representation, the sexual body and the LGBT identity. Using animation‘s various forms, her materials and treatments range from the highly experimental to the character-driven narrative. She’s currently applying to festivals with her recently finished film “Happy & Gay.” Her film “Grace” received “Grand Prize” at the Ottawa Student Animation Festival, and the “High Risk Award” at Fantoche Animation Festival, among others. Her creative practice has received funding, fellowships and residencies from such organizations as LEF Moving Image, Harvard University Film Study, the MacDowell Colony, and others.

Christine Stewart is a media artist, educator and Associate Professor of Film and Screen Arts in the Faculty of Design and Dynamic Media. Her work has shown in North America, Europe and Asia at a variety of festivals and venues, and has been supported by the Canada Council and BC Arts Council. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Access to Media Education Society, and is a past Director at VIVO.

Her studio based, process oriented practice variously employs digital media, film, sound, photography, language, performance and installation. Current projects reflect her interest in evolving narrative structures, hybrid technological forms and the relational dynamics of sustainability.  

Allison Hrabluik is an artist and filmmaker living in Vancouver. She completed graduate studies at the HISK in Gent, Belgium, in 2007, and received her BFA from the Alberta College of Art and Design in 1999. Working primarily with video, animation, drawing and installation, Allison's work has been shown in exhibitions and film festivals internationally.

Martin Rose is an Associate Professor in Animation and has been an independent animation filmmaker in Vancouver for two decades. In addition to his faculty responsibilities at Emily Carr, Martin also worked as a producer at the National Film Board, Pacific & Yukon Centre. There, he coordinated several auteur animation projects, both in development and in production, including CMYK, The Trembling Veil of Bones, How People Got Fire, and Animate Everything. 

Ceile Prowse was born in Montreal, and grew up in England. She has a Masters from the National Centre for Computer Animation in Bournemouth, U.K. Ceile has worked commercially and independently in animation using traditional cel animation, stop-motion and 3D animation and more recently a mix of 3D and 2D computer animation using photographs. Her films employ a playful approach to issues like addiction, bereavement, Princess Diana and motherhood.  Her work has been screened and broadcast internationally. She has been an instructor in Animation at Emily Carr University since 2006 and conducts workshops in animation at a variety of Elementary schools throughout the lower mainland.
