vessels

This project continues my exploration into repetition, replication and material. The pieces are all cast from prized antique vessels from my parents. In the process of making molds, the originals are invariably destroyed, meaning the life and memory that is intrinsic to the pieces is translated to these new, imperfect replicas. The edges are ragged and accentuated with the gloss of clear glaze, the only detailing present on the replicas, besides the original shape and lettering. The pieces are dualities of new and old, unearthed and polished, one of a kind and multiplied. Each piece has a double life yet exists, intertwined, with its neighbour to become a small part of a whole.

vessels is an exploration of shape, repetition and functionality (or lack thereof). These pieces, slipcast in various shades of grey, represent the same shape repeated in multiplied form, over and over. Vessels is, overall, a commentary on the design process and the constant need for function. As a designer it was interesting to try deliberately to create a series that defied function and instead focus solely on form and aesthetic.
