Carto-Activism Workshop with Mimi Gellman | The Commons

What do maps do and how do they do it? On Wednesday, September 30 from 8:30am–11:20am, join Mimi Gellman in a dialogic and hands-on workshop that will shape a literal disruption of the map as a “truthful” representation of land and function as a symbolic action that may open us up to a rethinking and restorying of place.

Student Services: Print Party! | The Commons

Join Student Services today in the Northwest corner of the Concourse Gallery in their Living Room installation for a Print Party. Learn the basics of screen printing and pick up an Art School for Life tote bag or t-shirt!

Listening Place: There is No Me in Vinyl | The Commons

Students in Glen Lowry’s HUMN 306 – Listening to Vinyl will work together to design a listening environment for members of the Emily Carr community to come together and share in “vinyl experiences.”

As an exploration of older analogue forms of music playback and newer modes of digital interactivity, LP is a hybrid installation. This installation will blend programmed music and spontaneous sharing. To this end, members of the community are invited to bring their records and to play these alongside selections chosen by members of the class. One purpose of this installation is to slow people down. The experience will explore notions of familiarity and intimacy in a semi-public context. Coffee will be served.

Saving Seed as a Radical Action | The Commons

As part of Cameron Cartiere’s HUMN 307 – Environmental Ethics course, this event brings into discussion our relationship with food, the environment, and the politics of seed saving.

Led by Mel Sylvestre from UBC Farm, the event will be an opportunity to have a hands-on experience with seed harvesting and learning about the relation to place-specificity and seeds; social justice and GMOs; and land use through seed collection and rotation. While this is held in conjunction with HUMN 307, the event is open to anyone who wants to participate in the session.

Together on Undiscovered Ground with Lucie Chan | The Commons

Let’s draw together by sharing what mapping, mark-making, land, and place means to us individually and collectively.

On Tuesday, September 29th, from 8:30am–3:20pm, join Lucie Chan in the Concourse Gallery as part of The Commons: Land/Place | Maps/Mark-Making. It’s open to all levels of Emily Carr students, bring your own supplies, and there will be some available in the space as well. A black and white event!

The Commons Fall 2015 | Land/Place + Maps/Mark-Making

For one week each semester, Emily Carr’s Concourse Gallery is transformed into The Commons. Part pro- totype, part program, The Commons is made up of a kit of modular parts, including spatial, temporal, and creative resources, intended to cultivate dynamic spaces for teaching, learning, and social gathering.

In consideration of the land on which we work and the places we cultivate in and around campus, The Commons will explore notions of land and place in relation to our current and future campuses.
