Faculty Show 2011

Lucinda Atwood | Birds on a Wire, digital photography

Emily Carr’s annual Faculty Show opens in conjunction with the beginning of the academic semester, offering a glimpse at the wide range of interests and creative investigation of our distinguished faculty.

The Faculty Show affords an opportunity for students and the public to appreciate the diverse areas of professional development of these educators, whose personal research and practice informs their teaching and the pursuit of excellence in the disciplines of design, media and visual arts.

Paper Neighbours | Summer Institute for Teens Exhibition

This exhibit will feature work from the 80 young artists and designers in the 2011 Summer Institute for Teens. From nine different studio areas, students will exhibit final individual and group projects, including drawings, paintings, soft sculptures, ceramics, graphic novels, and work in various media informed by traditional and contemporary Aboriginal art.

UponOccasion - Low-Residency MAA Exhibition

UponOccasion is an exhibition of work produced in the first year of research by the inaugural cohort of the Low Residency stream of the Master of Applied Arts Program. The works presented mark an occasion. Ten artists converge in Vancouver for a month long conversation, a period of production, study and reflection.

In the spirit of Irit Rogoff"s proposition that the event of the art exhibition can instead be understood as an occasion of art, the public is welcome to experience the works contained here as manifests of what is underway.

Transformation - The Built Surface Exhibition

Peter Sickert

Transformation is an exhibition of work that brings together artists compelled to uncover, excavate and enrich surfaces of found objects. These practices point to an interest in creating alluring surfaces that draw viewers to consider ordinary and unconventional materials in new ways. Using the vocabulary of reclaimed materials, surface treatment and form as a metaphor for the lived experience, these works encourage us to consider objects beyond what they initially seem and to focus on their possibilities.

GRAND ENTRY

Grand Entry is an exhibition that showcases the multitude of artistic talents within the Aboriginal student body of Emily Carr University of Art + Design.

At a Powwow, the Grand Entry is the opening ceremony where elders, dancers, and honoured guests are gathered to the centre of the circle. Powwows are events where people come together to celebrate and share their diverse and unique cultural identities.

This exhibition is inspired by the same sense of unity and pride. The artists bring to the centre of the circle their art. We welcome everyone to join us in this celebration.

We would like to acknowledge that Emily Carr University of Art + Design resides on Coast Salish Territory.

Navigating Ethical Representation

Navigating Ethical Representation shares the important artwork and community building that came out of the collaboration between participants at the Dr. Peter Center, West End (DPC) and Emily Carr students taking a Community Projects course last fall. The course focused on challenges and successes in navigating ethical issues while representing and collaborating with people living with HIV/AIDS.
