Prepare for registration

You will receive an email informing you of your registration date about 4 weeks before registration opens for the next term.

You will register for courses using your myEC account. myEC is where you can check your grades, pay your deposit and tuition and maintain your contact information.

You must pay a deposit before registration. Instructions for how to set up your myEC account and pay your deposit are included in your acceptance correspondence.

If you need help setting up your myEC account and paying your deposit, email reghelp@ecuad.ca with your full name, student ID number and date of birth.

Course Planning

Before you register, it is important to have a course plan that meets the requirements of your degree.

Find the courses you need to take to complete your degree requirements in the Student Planning section of myEC. To access this section:

  • Log in to MyEC
  • Select “Student Planning” from the blue registration pane on your MyEC dashboard
  • Click the “My Progress” graphic, or select it from the Student Planning menu

Using your degree requirements as a guide, you can search for courses and add them to your plan.

Course Load Requirements

All undergraduate degrees require 120 credits to graduate.

We have a Fall Term (September-December), a Spring Term (January-April), and two short Summer Terms (May-June and July-August).

During the Fall and Spring terms, undergraduate students generally take between 12 to 15 credits.

The breakdown looks like this:

  • 9 to 12 studio credits
  • 3 to 6 critical studies credits
    Minimum credit load required for BC student loans

    You must be enrolled in at least nine credits to be eligible for a BC student loan, and twelve credits to maintain a BC Arts Council scholarship and/or an Emily Carr tuition scholarship. Visit the Financial Aid + Awards page for more information about loans and tuition scholarships.

    Maximum Credit Load

    The maximum number of credits you can take per term is 18.

    You can register for more than 12 studio credits in a term through a process called Studio Overload Access. The maximum number of credits per term remains 18.

    Registration over the 12 credit limit opens a few days after the All University Release day during the Fall and Spring terms. The opportunity to register ends on the last weekday of Add/Drop week. Find key dates for your registration when you choose your term.

    Paying tuition

    All outstanding debts must be cleared in order to register. If you have a hold on your file, please email cashier@ecuad.ca to arrange payment.

    You are responsible for the full amount of tuition fees assessed once you have submitted your registration.

    If you have been de-registered you are still responsible for the fees assessed. Please visit Financial Services for more information.

    Terms you should know before registering

    Prerequisite

    A prerequisite refers to the courses or credits you must take to be eligible to register for a course. Prerequisites are listed within course descriptions.

    Not sure if you meet a prerequisite?

    If you think you meet the prerequisite, but not exactly as it is stated, (for example, you have transfer credit) contact Academic Advising before registration opens.

    Priority Rules + Releases

    Priority rules give students in a major and specific year levels priority to register for courses they require to graduate.

    Once students in a major have secured their required courses during the priority registration period, access opens up to other students in the same degree. This is called Degree Release.

    Access is then shared widely during the All-University Release.

    It is important to note that while priority rules release, prerequisites do not.

    Fall 2023 Section Registration Priorities

    Repeatable for Credit

    If a course is repeatable for credit, that information will be included in the course description, which is available through Current Course Listings or by clicking on the course title on MyEC.

    More on repeating courses for credit

    All attempts at repeating courses are calculated in the cumulative grade point average.

    If you try to register for a course that you have previously completed and it is not repeatable for credit you will receive an error message. For example, "AHIS-200 taken 1 time(s). Once allowed."

    Some courses, though repeatable, give registration priority to students who haven't taken the course. If this is the case, you will be able to register for the course when its other degree restrictions are removed.
