Jessica Sullivan - Flight of the Hummingbird

Jessica Sullivan (03) designed the book cover for Flight of the Hummingbird, a book by artist Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas. A public talk and book signing will be held Sunday, May 25, 2008, at the Museum of Anthropology at 2pm. A lucky audience member will win a reproduction of artwork from the book.

Naomi Singer - British Columbia Community Achievement Award Winner

Naomi Singer (89) recently won a British Columbia Community Achievement Award. The awards recognize and celebrate the spirit, imagination, dedication and contribution of British Columbians to their communities. Naomi has contributed her knowledge, skills and enthusiasm towards the enrichment and cultivation of community-based celebrations and public events. The most significant of these is the Winter Solstice Lantern Festival which is now in its fourteenth year and which attracts 12,000 community participants in five different Vancouver neighbourhoods.

Art45 is proud to present Occulture, an exhibition by Canadian painter Etienne Zack (00). In this latest series of works, the artist continues his reflection on painting. From references to canonical images (Velázquez’ Las Meninas, Delacroix’s La Liberté guidant le peuple) to studio work and the mechanisms of the art market, Etienne Zack observes the history of painting as well as its modern-day state.

Janice Toulouse Chartrand (79) and Nadia Myre (97) are both Emily Carr alumni as well as Concordia University alumni. Janice Chartrand will be honoured at Concordia's Faculty of Fine Arts Gallery as the first Aboriginal Fine Arts Graduate in the history of the university.

Thomas Buchan and Stuart Reaugh Nominated for Leo Award

First-time documentary filmmakers Thomas Buchan (o5) and Stuart Reaugh (05) have been nominated for a Leo award for the documentary Hope they co-directed with the National Film Board of Canada. Dennis Burke, Associate Dean, Degree Programs, was responsible for Sound Design and Re-recording Mixing as well as being the film's Composer.

Alongside groups including Yves Saint Laurent, Holt Renfrew, and IKEA, TIME Magazine has selected smashLAB's Design Can Change for inclusion in the Design 100. TIME's annual Design 100, which is on newsstands this month, lists the people and ideas behind today's most influential design. Design Can Change is an initiative aimed at uniting the world's graphic designers to use their influence and purchasing power to combat climate change.

Movers and Shapers 2008

Many of the designers featured in 2004 have gone on to international acclaim and are no longer considered emerging while most of the 2007 exhibitors are only beginning very influential design careers.
