Pace Society Promotional Fly-card
description
By, with, and for sex workers - PACE Society promotes safer working conditions by reducing harm and isolation through education and support. This school project requires students to create a promotional material for a non-profit organization. BackgroundOn September 28th, 2010, an Ontario court struck down three provisions that criminalize activities related to prostitution. Prostitution itself is not illegal in Canada but ancillary activities like advertising (communicating) and management ("living off the earnings") are criminalized. Ontario Supreme Court Judge Susan Himel cited evidence that these laws contribute to a climate in which sex workers are unsafe because they are forced to operate in secrecy.
ChallengeDespite the numerous public opinions, there has been a lack of facts and statistics regarding violence on sex workers. The challenge is to find an engaging way to draw public attention to the problem of sex workers.
SolutionI created a set of fly-cards with photograph of violence on sex workers. The weapons, such as tape and knife, were printed as a 'scratch' n 'remove' layer, like the ones in instant lottery tickets. With a coin, people could literally visualize the removal of tape or knife from the victim and reveal a statistical issue that sex workers are facing.
