HUMN 305 - SU01: Studies in the Humanities
In this linked academic and studio course, students will explore the intertwining of human activity and natural environments, responding to personal experiences and research through field journals. Trips to local sites in Vancouver (all accessible by public transportation), will offer opportunities for on-site drawing and photography, with the spontaneous observations and unpredictable energy of being on location. Students will also select their own unique site for detailed study and field guide development.
We will explore strategies for on-site drawing and research as well as other approaches to capturing observations and experiences. Course activities will range from research in archives, expert interviews, exploring documentary, reportage, storytelling and new ways to consider the role of the artist as visual commentator. The range of artistic output could vary from photodocumentary to imagined illustrative visions. Students will develop artwork and writing as personal responses to the class investigations.
Field journals provide a methodology for documentation, research and personal expression. Throughout the class, students will develop a thematic field guide as a means to collect imagery, expand research and develop ideas. The course will culminate with a longer investigative project that could take forms such as artist books, illustrated journals, posters, narrative photographs or a series of paintings with texts.

Dr. Cameron Cartiere is a creative practitioner specializing in public art, community engagement, urban renewal, and curatorial practice.
Cameron is the author of RE/Placing Public Art, co-editor of The Practice of Public Art and The Everyday Practice of Public Art: Art, Space, and Social Inclusion, and co-author of the Manifesto of Possibilities: Commissioning Public Art in the Urban Environment. She is the co-editor of the journal, Public Art Dialogue.
Cameron's SSHRC funded research is on the sustainable impacts of public art. Her collaborative project, Border Free Bees, works to transform neglected greenways into wild pollinator pastures using public art as the driver.
Cameron is the founder of chART Projects. From this creative base, the methodology of collaborative public practice can be found in the work of The chART Collective and chART Public Art Marpole. chART is currently at the Oak Park Fieldhouse.

Chris's research interests extend from the histories of the image as an aesthetic, political, and epistemological discourse. He writes and lectures on the concept of methodology in art as a step toward a non-disciplinary epistemology that recognizes art knowledge.
Chris's art practice is rooted in photography. Addressing the medium as a primary form of technical image-making, he explores its inherent questions about time and space by composing performative lectures that guide audiences through a sequence of "deep-res" pictures. Vignettes of video, music, and spoken word are combined in a narrative form that appeals to poem, essay, and film. His work has been exhibited internationally.
Previously, Chris served as the Director of the Jake Kerr Faculty of Graduate Studies. In 2010, he led the implementation of Emily Carr's Low Residency Masters program.

This course offers the opportunity to explore specific issues and texts in the humanities.
