As summer draws to a close, the halls of Emily Carr are starting to electrify with the creative energy of our students returning for another year of study!

Our new students, in addition to returning ones, bring our student population close to 1870. These students represent part of the next generation of visual artists, media artists and designers who will have a significant impact on the future of the creative industries in Canada and the world.

You Came Here by Chance | Photography Graduates Off-Site Exhibition

Posted: Wed, 2013-05-08 08:21

You Came Here By Chance is a group exhibition, highlighting select 2013 photography graduates from Emily Carr University of Art + Design.

The selected images aim to address the idea of space in relation to environment, both from a physical stand point and a state of mind. Through the included photographers considered contributions, the binaries of transience and permanence when occupying space are evaluated by the photographic medium and supplementary materials. As viewers interact with the works exhibited, it is intended that they in turn will begin to think about their personal relationships with the spaces they occupy.

In This Together Exhibition

Posted: Tue, 2013-04-16 13:16

In This Together is an exhibition evolving from an independently organized colloquium between students in three Masters of Art programs at the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University and Emily Carr University of Art + Design.

The artists in this exhibition collaborated across institutions to share their knowledge and diverse experiences of life in art school. The colloquium, which took place in March 2013, centered on discussions around the pressure of professionalization and the growth and understanding of shifts in the artists’ praxis. With this in mind, In This Together evokes a formidable space of suspension between different modes of artistic production.

Fourth year Illustration major Patrick Wong received a runner-up nomination for CQ31 in Creative Quarterly: The Journal for Art & Design for his piece Death Rituals.

The illustration was created in Associate Professor Justin Novak's VAST 400 senior studio class as an art directed project. Death Rituals explores the capacity for chimpanzees to grieve for their dead and that through this common experience, it serves as a reminder that humans are also connected to the animal kingdom.
