Bruce Emmett | Mill Project

Posted: Fri, 2012-05-11 13:37

Bruce Emmett's (Low Residency MAA candidate) Mill Project re-imagines a site in West Vancouver which has held three unique histories: the Vedder River Shingle Mill, West Vancouver Secondary School and the Inglewood "Mill" Skatepark.

Constructed in 1977, the skateboard park was the first in Canada, only to be deliberately buried underneath six feet of soil and rock, little more than seven years after its creation. The community's reaction against youth skate subculture was marked in time by this physical act of erasure.

The subterranean artifact of the skatepark embodies the Mill Project: an evocative investigation of subcultural identity, dominant ideologies, mythologies, and local history.

Fourth year photography student Hua Jin will show her project My Big Family at the Richmond Art Gallery.

My Big Family (2010-present) is a long-term and ongoing project that Jin started in the summer of 2010. More than just a portrait of her own big family, the project's purpose is to examine the gradual disappearance of the traditional large families in contemporary Chinese society since the inception of the One-Child Policy in 1978. During six months traveling in China, Jin visited over forty members of her extended family and documented their lives via the media of photography, video and text.

Emily Carr's Faculty of Culture + Community and TransLink present Art On Transit, a rolling showcase of student artwork – now in its second year! The project features 38 unique works by students displayed on reserve advertising panels on buses and Sky Trains around the lower mainland.
The project provides TransLink customers with visual interest during their travels, and an opportunity for our emerging artists to display their work to a wide audience.

The selection panel included judges from both Emily Carr and TransLink, who based their choices on artistic excellence and suitability for the transit environment. Students received an honorarium from TransLink and will have their work displayed for a one-year period.
