Spring Break Art Camp

Explore the design process as it applies to architecture and architectural space. In this hands-on course, you will investigate architecture as a 2D and 3D spatial discipline through sketching, scale-drawing, drafting and model building. Learn to consider the locational, contextual and structural aspects of architecture design through site studies and analysis. Working on individual projects, you will develop creative problem-solving skills and learn to represent your ideas architecturally. The skills you learn in this course will be useful in a variety of disciplines, including architecture + environmental design, animation, filmmaking, illustration and industrial design.

Board games combine many design and artistic elements to create a fun, playable experience. Whether you are interested in video games or product design, the process of creating a board game presents a unique opportunity to consider user experience and gameplay to achieve an engaging and functional product. Working in teams, you will examine existing games of different types, generate ideas for your own games, define a ruleset, and prototype your own board game. This course builds an excellent foundation for game design, and the acquired knowledge can also be applied to industrial design, interaction design, product design and UX design.

Bring stories to life by creating compelling characters. In this course, you will explore how narratives and personality traits inform character design and development. Learn how to turn basic forms and shapes into realistic or stylized characters by applying anatomy principles and shading, and considering proportions and exaggeration. Explore your character in relation to its environment by considering scale, and investigate how you can express personality and mood through posture, stance, and colour. The skills you learn in this course can be applied in a variety of creative disciplines, including animation, filmmaking, game design, graphic novel, illustration.

Code Art is the process of using computer programming to create new forms, shapes, colours and patterns that result in unique works of art and design. In this course, you will be introduced to the p5.js open-source library, a resource that makes creative coding accessible, inclusive and fun for artists and beginners. Each session will combine visual arts theory and practice with a coding challenge. Using existing assets from the p5.js library, you will learn to write code to generate digital paintings, animations, interactive art, web pages, apps, etc. You will gain a new tool for making art and develop skills that can be applied to animation, communication design, illustration, interaction design, product design, UI design and web design.

You will learn to use lighting, composition, perspective, colour theory, and design techniques to illustrate your vision. You will learn to apply perspective drawing to environments, set designs and characters, and develop the skills to visually present your stories: from ideas to script, to thumbnails, to final storyboards. Apply the skills you learn in this course to a wide range of creative disciplines, including animation, communication design, filmmaking, game design, graphic novels, illustration and interaction design.
