RBC Emerging Artist Peoples Choice Award

The Gardiner Museum is pleased to announce the inaugural $10,000 RBC Emerging Artist People’s Choice Award. A panel of experts nominated sessional faculty member Eliza Au, Jeremy Hatch (00) and Alwyn O’Brien (05) as well as two other young artists.

This award provides each artist with the opportunity to showcase new work created specifically for the competition and is currently on display at the Gardiner Museum.

Presented as part of the Canadian Art Gallery Hop, Associate Professor Ben Reeves uses images derived from the Internet or from his own photographs, and dissembles these into a pattern of brushstrokes for this current exhibit.

Rodney Konopaki + Rhonda Neufeld | Chance Operations²

Burnaby Art Gallery presents Chance Operations², an exhibition of recent collaborative drawings, prints and collages by Associate Professor Rodney Konopaki and alumna Rhonda Neufeld (‘79). The two have worked together since 2007 exploring the act and meaning of collaborative art making through projects which involve sharing, interfering, walking, observing, recording, reflection and dialogue. 

Arni Haraldsson | Awake in Mt. Pleasant

CSA Space presents Awake in Mt. Pleasant, an exhibition by Associate Professor Arni Haraldsson.

Since the eighties Arni Haraldsson has amassed a vast collection of found imagery from various religious publications such as Awake! and Plain Truth that were made available to him while strolling in his neighbourhood of Mount Pleasant. Haraldsson clipped the photographic images from these publications and assorted them into various categories ... Awake in Mt. Pleasant can be seen as an unorthodox portrait of the artist's neighbourhood. Guest curated by Alex Pensato.

Associate professor Diyan Achjadi has two new exhibitions taking place:

No. 3 Road Art Columns:
Those visiting Canada Line stations along Richmond's No. 3 Road will be greeted with lively multi-cultural, day and evening city scenes just installed in the City's circular art columns. It is the third exhibit of works by local artists at the Richmond-Brighouse, Lansdowne and Aberdeen Canada Line stations, presented by the City's Public Art program.

Holly Ward | Persistence of Vision

Sessional faculty member Holly Wards interdisciplinary practice is centered on ideas surrounding social progress and political power, and serves to examine the role of art within this. In Persistence of Vision, Holly investigates symbolic strategies of resistance and the use of utopian discourse as a starting point for revolution. The exhibition creates a linkage between contemporary spaces of protest and historical representations of the utopian city square.

Featuring new sculptural and print work, the exhibition is an extension of her ongoing interest in social engagement and the utopian imaginary.

Sessional faculty member, Jane Slemon, has an upcoming CD release. Breathing August-- is a compilation of songs written over the past 25 years, and features the fine Vancouver musicians she plays with regularly.

Associate Professor Justin Novak is currently one of the 2011 Louis Odette Sculptor-in-Residence's in the Faculty of Fine Arts at York University.

The Louis Odette Sculptor-in-Residence Program launched in York's Faculty of Fine Arts in 2002. The program strives to create a dynamic learning environment which supports the advancement of the art of sculpture, and where students benefit from participation in and observation of professional studio practices. The residency program provides the opportunity for upper-level undergraduate visual arts students to develop an enhanced working understanding of sculpture techniques from the perspective of eminent guest artists.

Grow Workshops

Sessional faculty member Holly Schmidt joins Vancouver Design Nerds, Ocean Dionne, Alicia Medina Laddaga and a team of master gardeners for a workshop exploring the possibilities for growing food in the urban environment.

Through observation, discussion and hands-on prototype building participants create and share new ways to grow food in the city. Small pocket gardens will be planted at Creekside and then suspended on chain link fences near the Grow project site. All levels of experience with design and gardening are welcome and all workshops are free.
