This summer the Burnaby Art Gallery presents The Moveable Feast, a public project by alumna and sessional faculty member Holly Schmidt. The Moveable Feast is a series of workshops, edible events, free youth programs and a vegetable garden beside Ceperley House in Deer Lake Park.

The Moveable Feast responds to the current global mobility of food in the context of rapidly dwindling food varieties. Interested in issues surrounding urban farming, food production and consumption Schmidt has constructed a series of planters complete with seating areas and work tables, planting various vegetable that she will be cultivating throughout the summer.

What we look at and how we look at it are important aspects of social interaction and communication. Because of the way our brains are hard-wired we want to look at faces. Portraits invite us to gaze at other people’s faces without embarrassment or fear. They invite us to understand ourselves as we contemplate the image of someone else.

Drawn from the City of Burnaby’s Permanent Art Collection, The Gaze of History probes the conventions of portraiture and the exchange of the gaze through drawing, printmaking, photography and painting.

Sessional faculty member Sara Vipond is guest curator for the upcoming exhibition, To Follow a Line - Explorations in Contemporary Drawing at the Campbell River Art Gallery.

Exhibiting artists include Anne Palmer ('11), Joyce Lindemulder ('10), Julia Crucil ('10), Sarah Stein ('11), Madelaine Elia ('11) and Deborah Sears ('11).

The exhibit runs to June 22, 2012.

Landon Mackenzie, Professor and Academic Liaison for International Initiatives at Emily Carr, is showcased in the current Global Astronomy Month 2012. She is one of the international artists profiled for the online exhibition curated by Astronomer's Without Borders, an organization based in the Netherlands.

Sessional faculty member Shinsuke Minegishi ('98) will showcase his prints in a solo exhibition, Memory of Existence, at Striped House Gallery in Tokyo, Japan, from June 16 to 30, 2012.

As a photographer, Associate Professor Art Perry, has engaged the “look” in his portraits of people who have been offbeat or innovative iconoclasts.

Hip! Portraits of Cool is an exhibit at Smash Modern Art & Design that includes portraits of cultural icons: Rudolf Nurveyev, Devendra Banhart, Dizzy Gillespie, Patti Smith, Werner Herzog, Joe Strummer, Allen Ginsberg, Max von Sydow, Laurie Anderson, Leon Golub, William Klein, Nick Cave, Philip Glass, Louise Bourgeois, Antony Hegarty, Natasha Khan (Bat for Lashes), The Handsome Family and Lady Diana.

This is the final week of the the exhibition C.1983 at Presentation House Gallery in North Vancouver.

The exhibit includes the work of current photography faculty Arni Haraldsson and Marian Penner Bancroft, former faculty member Ian Wallace, Stan Douglas ('82) and Michelle Normoyle.

Former sessional faculty member Margaret Dragu has been named as one of eight winners of the 2012 Governor General's Awards in Visual and Media Arts. The $25,000 award recognizes career achievement in the visual and media arts by Canadian artists.

DiVA (Digitally Ventriloquized Actor), a three-year research project that ran from 2008 to late 2011, concentrated on developing digital musical instruments for realtime conversion hand gestures into synthetic expressive voice.

The interdisciplinary team based out of UBC include: computer and electronic engineers, linguists, musicians, performers and designer and Emily Carr Assistant Professor Hélène Day Fraser.

The Burnaby Art Gallery presents the first survey exhibition of Professor Emeritus, Renée Van Halm’s work in Cross-Cutting/Inside Out.

The exhibit primarily focuses on Renée’s works on paper, as the exhibition explores in detail the artist’s interest in the role architecture plays in shaping our physical and social interactions. With this as an underlying theme, Cross-Cutting/Inside Out surveys over thirty years of work by the recognized Canadian painter.
