Alumnus Kevin Eastwood (’99) is an award winning filmmaker who has worked on everything from dark comedies (Fido, the 2007 movie about a boy and his pet zombie), to TV biopics (2008’s Elijah), to documentaries dealing with serious global issues (Eco-Pirate: The Story of Paul Watson in 2011, and Oil Sands Karaoke in 2013). These projects, and the many others to his credit, have found critical, commercial and financial success and made Kevin a sought-after producer and director. Still, the unprecedented success of his latest project, Emergency Room: Life and Death at VGH, exceeded all his expectations.

Kathryn Mussallem (MAA'08/Continuing Studies Instructor) was recently awarded the 2013 Educator Scholarship Master of Professional Studies in Digital Photography program at the School of Visual Arts New York, New York. This $20,000 USD scholarship was awarded for study in the Low Residency MPS in Digital Photography Program.

A two-time graduate of Emily Carr, BFA, (Photo) in 2000 and Master of Applied Arts, (Visual Arts) in 2008, Kathryn has been tearching photography, visual arts and digital media at the University Carr since 2005. She is an internationally published and exhibited artist in Canada, the US and the UK.

The University is proud to announce that Lisa Fraser ('10) has received the 2013 Carter Wosk BC Creative Achievement Award in the Industrial Design category for her medical assistive device, Snug Vest - an  inflatable vest that provides Deep Pressure Therapy.

The BC Creative Achievement Awards honour BC artists whose work is judged to be innovative, original and creative while having a practical function. The awards will be presented later this Fall at a formal ceremony at Shaw Studios in Vancouver.

Lisa Fraser (’10) knows the importance of a hug. While volunteering and working with autistic children, she became familiar with weighted vests that incorporated deep pressure therapy to help calm and soothe the user.

Waiting to fly out for a destination wedding in Las Vegas, 4th year Industrial Design student Scott Forsythe noticed a new email from Emily Carr University’s Career and Co-Op Office.

An alert for the senior Industrial Design students – the prestigious brand IKEA of Sweden had hand-selected Emily Carr University’s Design program for inclusion in a special internship competition.  He was intrigued.

November 14, 2013 |  This morning, Cathy McLeod, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Labour and for Western Economic Diversification and Member of Parliament for Kamloops- Thompson-Cariboo, announced Government of Canada support for equipment upgrades to the University's Intersections Digital Studios.

These funds will support research that will assist the University in staying relevant and competitive in the film, health and advanced materials sectors through the purchase of state-of-the-art motion capture, post-production, and 3D prototyping equipment.

Visualizations for recently launched tool expose online tracking

Emily Carr University's Research Centre in Social + Interactive Media announces the launch of Lightbeam, a new Add-on for the Firefox browser that enables users to visualize online data tracking in real time.  Mozilla, the developer of Firefox, partnered with the University on a year-long research project to improve Lightbeam's interactive visualization. 

Natural Capital was offered as an interdisciplinary, studio-based Community Projects course (CCID 200/300) for the first time at Emily Carr in Fall 2012 and then again in Spring 2013.

The course, offered in partnership with the David Suzuki Foundation (DSF), was designed by instructor Sarah Van Borek to support DSF's natural capital work while enabling students to apply their art skills to sustainability initiatives in the community.

Beayue Louie, a fourth year Industrial Design student, was awarded the 2013 Association of Canadian Ergonomists Undergraduate Student Award for her assistive design project, Play By Ear: Adaptive Earring Clips, which was presented at ACE’s 44th Annual Conference: "From Sea to Sky: Expanding the Reach of Ergonomics" in Whistler, BC (October 2013).

Our sense of self is often shaped by how we believe others view us. Thus, the way we express ourselves through clothing and accessories plays an important role in the development of our identity. This serves true for both individuals with a disability and those without.

Emily Carr alumna Colleen Heslin ('03) received the distinguished $25,000 RBC Canadian Painting Competition award Wednesday, October 2, 2013, for her work, Almost young, wild and free. The award for emerging artists, is one of the largest in Canada. The national public touring exhibition showcasing the works of all 15 finalists is currently in Ottawa and will travel across the country.
