The Audain Foundation Gifts $5M to Emily Carr

It is with great pleasure that we announce a transformational gift of $5-million from BC arts philanthropist Michael Audain and his family foundation, the Audain Foundation for Visual Arts. This is the single largest individual donation the University has received and will be a cornerstone for the new Emily Carr Great Northern Way Campus.

The donation will create the Audain School of Visual Arts - an enhanced visual arts learning environment offering a studio-based education reflective of the diversity and complexity of contemporary art. The School will encompass the existing Faculty of Visual Art + Material Practice which houses Painting, Ceramics, Print Media, Illustration, Photography, Sculpture and Drawing.

Albert Law | Applied Arts Photography Annual

Albert Law's ('11) work with the Canadian Forces and Vancouver Police Department have been selected as winning entries in the Applied Arts 2013 Photography Annual.

One series and two individual photographs will be published in the May issue. This is the second year that Albert's images have been selected for the annual publication, three of his images were featured in the 2012 edition. To see more work, visit www.albertlaw.ca.

Today, Premier Christy Clark announced the Province's investment in a new Emily Carr Great Northern Way Campus.  This is a historic moment for our institution and for championing the creative sector and innovation in British Columbia.

The new campus will be purpose built and provide students, faculty, alumni, life-long learners and the community with a world class state-of-the-art facility for 21st century learning. Emily Carr will have a home to match our global reputation as a leader in art, design media and applied research.

What makes a city special?  On Tuesday, January 29th at 7:30pm, Vancouverites can revisit a time when their city was unique in North America for its abundance of neon signs, spilling pools of colour onto rainy nighttime streets.

The Vancouver Heritage Foundation will present the documentary Glowing in the Dark in a public screening that night at Vancouver's historic Hollywood theatre.

Hua Jin Wins Mayor's Art Award

Congratulations to Hua Jin ('12) who picked up the Mayor's Art Award for Emerging Artist in September.

Hua Jin is a visual artist who has exhibited photo-based works in Canada, China, and the Netherlands. Originally trained as an animator and graphic designer, she has also worked as an artistic and creative director. Her works are included in many publications and private collections including the public collection of Museum of Contemporary Art in Shanghai (MOCA).

It was recently announced the that former student Skeena Reece, Tsimshian/Gitxsan/Cree, Ucluelet, is a recipient of a 2012 BC Creative Achievement Award for First Nations’ Art.

The juried competition celebrates artistic excellence in traditional, contemporary or media art.

Sonny Assu | Kingsway Trail

As part of Vancouver’s 125th Anniversary, the City of Vancouver commissioned Sonny Assu ('02) to design a street marker to be installed along Kingsway from Main Street to Boundary Road. The signs mark Kingsway’s shared history as an aboriginal foot trail and wagon road. The artwork incorporates the artist’s signature style of Pop-Culture-meets-Aboriginal Art to make this history visible in our daily lives.
