Dr. Ron Burnett,
 President + Vice-Chancellor, will be speaking at Digifest Innovation Days on Thursday, October 27, 2011 from 1:40 to 2:25pm.

His talk Learning and Innovation in Global and Digital Cultures focuses on post-secondary education in Canada as it undergoes many changes as we rush to promote the utility of education, reducing learning to a series of “quick courses” that privilege speed and training over gradualism research and exploration.

Drawing on a rich cultural history that positions Emily Carr as one of the world’s leading arts institutions, the Master of Applied Arts Degree is unique in its commitment to interdisciplinarity and emergent forms of cultural production. Courses in research, critical theory and studio practice integrate methodological threads that span diverse art forms and knowledge systems. Master of Applied Arts cohorts are chosen with attention to the unique combination of attributes students bring, resulting in balanced and dynamic study groups. The MAA is delivered through two distinct but interrelated programs: Resident and Low-Residency.

Teen Art Group | Launch September 22

The Vancouver Art Gallery and Continuing Studies at Emily Carr University of Art + Design are partnering to offer a new Teen Art Group in the 2011/12 school year. This unique program brings youth together with artists, facilitators and curators for hands-on workshops, Gallery tours, and interactive discussions. Join us for the launch on September 22 from 4-7 pm at the Vancouver Art Gallery! Enjoy a behind-the-scenes tour, free food, and a chance to get involved in Vancouver’s newest arts and culture group for teens! The launch is free for youth ages 15-18.

Are you an artist, a revolutionary, an owner? Questions of ownership permeate our culture – sample a sound, claim the East Van sign, remix a logo… Whether you’re an artist playing with images or sound, a coder or an activist, at some point you’ve probably asked yourself whether what you are doing is legal.

The Artists’ Legal Outreach (ALO) in association with New Forms Festival 2011 and W2 Community Media Arts presents Art, Revolution and Ownership, a multidisciplinary exploration of the ideas that inform art and the law. The performances, exhibitions and conversations explore the idea of the public domain, copyright and cultural consumption.

Randy Lee Cutler | Surrealism and Science

Join Associate Professor Randy Lee Cutler at the Vancouver Art Gallery's Surrealism Salon 1 for a talk that explores the surrealist enterprise and its relation to the scientific culture, ideas and methods. The lecture will be followed by an open discussion led by UBC philosophy professor Dominic Lopes.

This is the first in a series of events that are part of the Vancouver Art Gallery's Surrealism study group.
