Science and art are often thought of as being at the opposite ends of the spectrum. A new exhibition that showcases work created by Emily Carr students and alumni who have been working with researchers at TRIUMF, Canada’s national lab for particle and nuclear physics, disproves just that.

Over 200 students from Vancouver’s six post-secondary institutions, including Emily Carr University of Art + Design, have been working on projects related to Vancouver’s Greenest City 2020 Goals. Irving K. Barber is an entrepreneur, philanthropist and a visionary thinker.  As the founder of Slocan Forest Products in 1978, Dr. Barber successfully built the company to be a leader among lumber producers.  His tireless work supporting research in the forest industry and his desire to create scholarship programs for greater education in British Columbia has benefited many people throughout his career.  A number of these educational programs have assisted Emily Carr University of Art + Design students in their academic pursuits in the areas of sculpture, visual arts and industrial design.  To date, The Irving K. Barber Scholarship Society has granted 36 awards to Emily Carr students totalling $73,000.

Growing student demand for the internationally recognized programs offered at Emily Carr University of Art + Design has initiated an exciting plan for a new home at Great Northern Way in Vancouver.

The Honourable Minister Naomi Yamamoto announced today, March 20, 2012, that with the support of the Province, the University will develop a comprehensive business case for the Emily Carr Campus Redevelopment Project. The business case will include:

Earth Hour began in 2007 in Sydney, Australia when 2.2 million individuals and more than 2,000 businesses turned their lights off for one hour to take a stand against climate change.

In 2011, Earth Hour saw hundreds of millions of people across 135 countries switch off for an hour. But it also marked the start of something new – going Beyond the Hour to commit to lasting action on climate change.

New Westminster-born artist Joseph Plaskett, established the Joseph Plaskett Foundation in 2004 to support a mature Canadian student to travel and/or study art in Europe for one year.  We are pleased to announce that the 2011 winner of the Joseph Plaskett Award was Emily Carr alum, Jessica Groome ('02).  The $25,000 award is selected by a jury of artists, who are all respected painters and educators.  Jessica received her BFA from Emily Carr University of Art + Design in 2007 and has since gone on to various group exhibitions and her own solo show.  Her destination of choice from the generosity of the Plaske

Nay’-Chem Was “The Talking Stick” is an exhibit of Indigenous artists who were asked to exhibit their own version of the Talking Stick. Artists in the show include second year student Lance Cardinal, assistant professor Merritt Johnson, Peter Morin (’01), Dionne Paul (’06), Michelle Sylliboy (’01), sessional faculty member Janice Toulouse, Charlene Vickers (’94) and Xwalacktun (Rick Harry) (’82).

Animator, multimedia artist, and Emily Carr Honorary Professor Pierre Hébert has been awarded the prestigious Career Award for screenwriters and filmmakers by the Conseil des arts et des letters du Quebec (CALQ).

Mr. Hebert received a grant of $100,000 and expects to use the funds to undertake research that will extend his Sites and Monuments project and further explore the relationship between animation and real film.
