The Audain Foundation Gifts $5M to Emily Carr

Posted: Fri, 2013-03-22 17:26

It is with great pleasure that we announce a transformational gift of $5-million from BC arts philanthropist Michael Audain and his family foundation, the Audain Foundation for Visual Arts. This is the single largest individual donation the University has received and will be a cornerstone for the new Emily Carr Great Northern Way Campus.

The donation will create the Audain School of Visual Arts - an enhanced visual arts learning environment offering a studio-based education reflective of the diversity and complexity of contemporary art. The School will encompass the existing Faculty of Visual Art + Material Practice which houses Painting, Ceramics, Print Media, Illustration, Photography, Sculpture and Drawing.

Join Kent Monkman (Cree) on a journey into his art and life as an artist. His works are diverse: installations, performance art, large-scale paintings, digital media art, illustration, and short films. Each work is startling in its imagination, seductive in its beauty and powerful with its narrative authority.

This presentation is part of the SFU Public Square Events and was programmed by award-winning filmmaker and writer Loretta Todd. It is the final public program associated with the exhibition co-curated by Peter Morin and Dr. Martine Reid, Carrying on “Irregardless”: Humour in Contemporary Northwest Coast Art, at the Bill Reid Gallery

Sans Façon and Emily Carr's Graduate Studies were in the news this week following the success of the Limelight Saturday Night project in Vancouver both in Marpole and Downtown.

Their travelling public art installation discreetly replaces two street light heads with theatrical spotlights, creating an open invitation for passersby to perform and transform the street into a stage. The artists were joined by Bryan Newson, Public Art Program Manager for the City of Vancouver and Dr. Cameron Cartiere, Dean of Graduate Studies at Emily Carr University of Art + Design.
