In this two-week program, creative youth will explore 2D and 3D art-making. Working with professional art instructors in a focused workshop environment, students will complete a variety of projects in drawing, painting, animation and soft sculpture. Sketching and an examination of the creative process will complement hands-on learning to create an engaging and accessible art experience for creative youth of all backgrounds.

Junior Art Intensive (JAI) builds foundational knowledge while emphasizing skill development and the creative process and helps prepare you for the Summer Institute for Teens program. JAI culminates with a public exhibition and celebration of student work in Emily Carr’s Michael O’Brian Exhibition Commons.

Learning Outcomes

Through successful completion of this program, you will be able to:

  • Apply foundational knowledge and competency in each of the four core subject areas
  • Adopt basic vocabulary related to drawing, painting, animation and soft sculpture methods and techniques
  • Develop your skills through hands-on learning in each of the four core subject areas
  • Understand how to use and handle tools and materials in each of the four core subject areas
  • Utilize sketching and ideation strategies while developing the creative process
  • Explore a variety of different materials as a form of personal expression
