loop, print, fade + flicker: David Rimmer's Moving Images

Former faculty member, David Rimmer, one of Canada's foremost experimental filmmakers, is the subject of loop, print, fade + flicker: David Rimmer's Moving Images (2009), the inaugural title in Pacific Cinémathèque's new Monograph Series on Western Canadian media artists and Anvil Press's new film series 24 per second.

In conjunction with the launch of the book, Rimmer's distinctive and emotionally resonant body of work, at once subtle, structurally meticulous and profoundly moving, will be the subject of a two-part retrospective at Pacific Cin

The City of Richmond announced six winners of the inaugural Richmond Arts Awards, awarded at a ceremony in Council Chambers on Friday, April 17, 2009.

Established to recognize the achievements and contributions to the arts by Richmond residents, artists, educators, organizers and business leaders, the Richmond Arts Awards are presented by the City of Richmond in partnership with the Richmond Arts Coalition and are sponsored by the Richmond News and Opacity Design Group Inc.

2009 BC Community Achievement Awards

Sam Carter, Assistant Professor, and Dr. Yosef Wosk, Philanthropist, were announced along with forty-three other outstanding British Columbians, as recipients of the 2009 British Columbia Community Achievement Awards.

An independent advisory council selects the recipients of the BC Community Achievement Awards. The recipients of the awards will be recognized in a formal presentation at Government House in Victoria on March 10, 2009. Each individual will receive a certificate and medallion designed by BC artist Robert Davidson.

Jane Slemon, lecturer - non-regular faculty, plays in the folk band ErRatica. Long self-acknowledged as the "masters of quarrel singing," ErRatica tackles an eclectic set of original and traditional tunes and songs. Other members of the band include Bernard Gobin, Cameron Stewart and Don Davidson.

Kristina Lee Podesva Featured in Canadian Art Publications

Kristina Podesva, sessional faculty, has been identified as one of Canada's standout MFAs in "Class of 2008" by Leah Sandals in the winter issue of Canadian Art Magazine. A review of her project, colourschool, which occupied the IDS building at Emily Carr last year, appears in C Magazine's Art Pedagogy Issue. Robert Labossiere reviews "Showroom," a project that Podesva conceptualized and organized with Inge Roecker and others at Centre A, in Border Crossings. And Emily Carr's student publication, Woo, features an interview in the January 2009 issue.

Karen Kazmer: Hollow / Shallow

Karen Kazmer, sessional and Continuing Studies faculty, is partnering with Joseph Kohnke in a collaborative exhibition, Hollow / Shallow, set out to examine ordinary inanimate spaces and objects by incorporating various modes of respiration in two diverse pneumatic installations. The movement of air acts as a fragile connector between elements in both pieces questioning the experience and positioning of the viewer.

Susan Stewart: Change Without Notice

Change Without Notice is an exhibition of immersive video projections by Susan Stewart, Associate Dean of Integrated Studies, in collaboration with artist and writer Seaton.

Film and video technology has been used above all to promote conventional fantasies of sexual, economic and social achievement. Through a set of overlapping video projections, we are searching to propose new modes of thought and to project alternative futures - alternative fantasies - in response to current social and environmental crisis.
