Eat St. Digital Cookbook
description
This is a digital cookbook project I worked on over the summer as a co-op, with fellow classmate, Kieran Wallace at Emily Carr University for the tv show, Eat St, through Invoke Media and Paperny Entertainment.
Made using InDesign and Adobe Digital Publishing Suite, this app looks at the vendors of the featured food trucks from season 3 of the tv show and their unique recipes. We designed this book with Eat St.,'s fun and lively existing brand in mind and used interactivity wherever possible.

This project posed the unique challenge of designing a cookbook without images. The hand illustrated headings and title pages are inspired by 1950’s window lettering, while selective colour creates hierarchy within the recipes.
Local Heroes

Local Heroes is a cookbook that highlights Canadian dishes with local ingredients. The biggest challenge of the project was to create a piece without any imagery at all, thereby bringing the focus to the typography. My intention was to make a prototype that captured both the warmth and simpicity in cooking a homemade meal, yet still had bursts of color for excitement.

This was created for my typography class. We were to design the cover, layouts, and style of certain sections of this cookbook as we interpreted its personality. I felt this cookbook, titled ‘Local Heroes’, along with its chapter headings and descriptions, presented itself as friendly, genuine, uplifting, and most of all, fresh. Everything from the color palates to type was chosen to convey this atmosphere. The layouts and color are playful and stimulating, while the type treatments are also friendly and welcoming, yet without losing its dependablility.

"Local Heros" --- Type-Only Cookbook
description
Designing a cookbook can be among the hardest of typographic challenges. The finished product has to be aesthetically-pleasing enough to attract potential purchasers, yet clear and concise enough to function as a kind of "how-to" manual, that most any literate person can easy navigate through and cook from.
This assignment is to produce a prototype of a contemporary text-only cookbook. The goal in this assignment is to revitalize the text-only cookbook by producing something that, despite its lack of imagery, is nonetheless both beautiful and functional.

Local Heroes Cookbook Prototype
description
In this project the student was given a selection of recipes from a cookbook. The challenge lies in displaying the cuisine of the recipes without using images. Being a cookbook showcasing Canadian chefs using local ingredients David chose the Canadian designed font CartierBook to set the tone of the cookbook. A wood grain was used on the cover to give the piece a rustic and handmade feel.
