Nasty Habit
description
At fist glimpse, one might think that Nasty Habit—a 2013 sculpture project by Richard Heikkila-Sawan—is majestic or even glorious. Upon closer investigation the truth slaps the viewer in the face—assaults the senses. Created for the NET-ETH: Going out of the Darkness exhibition, Nasty Habit speaks rather heavy-handedly to the sensitive issues related to that of the residential schools. Standing twelve feet tall, the viewer is given the perspective like that of a small child.

Sound Value
description
'Sound Value' is an ode to a medium gone stale. It is a sculptural and systematic reinvestment of value through the use of repetition, assemblage and photography. Simply put, love of the message has been reinvested into the medium.
The work began as a series of accoustic-like, non-accoustic instruments and the collection of 13 lbs of CD's & DVD's. The donated disc materials quickly exceeded 20lbs until whittled down to the final iteration of the violin shell.
Body Space
video
description
Body Space is a reflection on the space our bodies occupy. Posture and movement are impeded by fragile cloth barriers, vision is obscured by the textile ceiling. Relative to the spaces we interact with daily in the city, this space is hostile, even though the material is innocuous. Within Body Space our physical limitations are brought to the forefront, and we notice our own vulnerability.
Body Space was an installation on Granville Island in 2011.

Wireframes Define Us
description
The conflict within our lives often presents a struggle between where we are and where we strive to be. Sometimes this can feel like quicksand as we sink deeper and deeper as we try to struggle free. Often we require the aid of those close to us or sometimes a stranger to help us break free. From a personal perspective, this sculpture aims to capture those moments of "quicksand".
