Salmon People
video
description
Salmon People considers the shared ecologies of salmon and humans through videos of spawning salmon combined with human activity in the ocean and river waters that are part of this Adams River salmon population’s migration route. The project presents a below-water point of view, a realm normally unavailable to human eyes. Salmon, human, marine bird sounds make up the sonic field in the project. Salmon People presents a recombinant video-audio panorama, a constantly changing land-sea-scape, signaling the intertwined worlds of humans and nonhuman beings.
Screen Test: Sugi
video
description
The Screen Tests are a pair of videos of canine collaborators, Tom and Sugi. The title quotes the series of films by Andy Warhol depicting close-up living portraits of his friends. As in Warhol’s works, the Screen Tests are slow-motion studies detailing minute changes of expression, and the subject’s self-consciousness in front of the camera. Each Screen Test provides a view of interspecies intimacy through the gaze of the canine looking back at the human. The viewer has an opportunity to witness the subtleties of dog perceptual sense. Each dog’s extreme concentration and steadfast observation returns the viewer’s similar attention.

Canines primarily investigate the world through scent-perception. Human noses have six million scent receptor sites, while dog noses have about three hundred million. Dogs have more genes for coding olfactory cells, more olfactory cells, and the receptors in the nose connect directly to olfactory bulbs. This combination of more and differing types, and quicker connections, affords dogs an estimated million times more sensitivity to scent than humans.

Impress: a machine learning approach to audio affect prediction
description
Soundscape Composition is the artistic processing and combination of sound recordings used to trigger associations and memories in a listener. Impress was designed to predict affect of soundscapes, at interactive speeds.
Impress was motivated by the lack of any measurement tool to aid soundscape performers in eliciting intended responses from listeners.
Impress facilitates the acquisition of audio training data from real-world environments. Moreover, it was designed to provide performers autonomous indication of affect during live performance along two axes of pleasantness and eventfulness.
