Third year design student, Sanghyun Samuel Kim, exhibits his work, Newly Born, in Green Revolution: Impact of Greening and Sustainability. Newly Born is Kim's lastest interpretation of the natural beauty of a tree by piling multiple layers of colourful scrubbing pads.

The exhibition examines the growing movement of greening and sustainability in architecture, design and community practices, with works by artists, designers, architects, students and others who have used alternative and recycled media.

Emily Carr Students Receive Applied Arts Awards

Emily Carr University of Art + Design is pleased to annouce that four students have been selected as winners in the student category of the 2010 Applied Arts Awards.

Fourth year students Jennifer Griffiths, Se Eun Kim, Pinar Undeger and Iris Wu were selected from record level entries and now have an invaluable opportunity to promote their work to an audience of the best and brightest of the design industry, as well as potential clients.

  • Fourth Year Students: June 14 and 15
  • Third Year Students: June 17 and 18

PNE Container Art | Call for Submissions

The Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) is working on a community collaboration with Emily Carr's Faculty of Culture + Community. PNE Container Art Show is a unique, multi-disciplinary venue/gallery housed in 12 to 20 foot shipping containers which will be set up in the Spirit Plaza area on the grounds. The 17-day show will be open-themed and the jury will select work that reflects the diversity of Vancouver artists.

Emily Carr 2010 Grad Awards

Recipients of the 2010 Graduation Exhibitions Awards were selected April 30, 2010, by a jury of accomplished Emily Carr alumni comprised of Kathleen Ritter, Rod Roodenburg, and Mark Soo. Criteria for the awards included students’ work in the exhibition, grade point average, and a combination of both. In total, fifteen awards valued at over $23,000 were bestowed upon graduating students.

Congratulations to recent Emily Carr Communication Design graduates Anna Bohn and Jennifer Griffiths, recipients of the 2010 Salazar Awards. Anna won in the Interactive Media Category while Jennifer won in the Print Category.

As well, the following students were awarded Honorable Mentions: Denise Cymbalist, Cameron McKague, Kimberly Sutherland and Pinar Undeger.

Jared Rhind + David Westwood | IDSA Merit Award Winners

The Emily Carr community congratulates current fourth year student, Jared Rhind, and current third year student, David Westwood, as the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) Senior and Junior Merit Award winners this year. These students were selected by an independent jury of professional designers in Seattle, Washington. Jury members were highly complimentary about the quality of work shown by Emily Carr students overall.

Habitat 160 | The Next Generation of Lower Mainland Homes

Join Emily Carr and FPInnovations as they present Habitat 160, integrated living units   ̶  160 square feet by 12 feet high.  

Building on the success of the Homes For Less design project completed in 2008, Associate Professor Christian Blyt has this time challenged students in 3D Core Design Studio V to create these unique living units comprised of Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT).

Gabriella Solti | Alcuin Award Winner

Gabriella Solti, current fourth year student, has won third prize in the Alcuin Society’s 28th Annual Awards for Excellence in Book Design in Canada in the Limited Edition Category with her book, The Sensory Delights of Text.

Emily Carr Students Design for Canadian Red Cross Efforts in Haiti

Communication Design student Shay Namazi in collaboration with Industrial Design student Desmond Wong, (with support from ID student Monica Gautier and the supervision of faculty Louise St. Pierre) have been working via daily communication with Haiti to design and develop a set of visual instructions for water purification. The design took more than ten iterative steps, as the drafts were reviewed and tested by field workers in Haiti, who then requested modifications so that the graphics suited the local context.
