Cats by T.S. Eliot

description

This project was a re-design of the popular poems from T.S. Eliot's Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats using typography to reflect the content and time in which it was written (1939) without the accompanying illustrations. The desired result was to create a children’s book for adults. Due to the challenging language of the poetry, it would be most likely that a parent would read it to their child and not vice versa. Therefore, it made sense to create a more sophisticated publication for the enjoyment of the adult reader. The focus was on using expressive typography for the titles of each poem and using photographs of feline fur as a subtle background texture to add depth as well as an air of elegance.

Daniel & Beatrice: 1940-1950

description

This monograph was designed for a self directed project in print publication. The only requirement for this project was to create a book on a single subject of your choosing. I chose to create a retrospective of the decade between 1940 and 1950 through the personal photographs of the people who lived it, my grandparents, Daniel and Beatrice Clark. An incredibly tumultuous decade historically and personally for the Clarks, they were married in 1943, separated by war from 1944 through to 1946, reunited at the end of that year, and finally able to start life as a married couple in 1947. The book matches photographs from the personal albums of Bea Clark with historical text and quotes from the decade.

Photos of My Friends

description

Have you ever wanted to say things about your friends that you've always wanted to say? This Summer, I photographed the people I know in Vancouver and wrote their obituaries. I also took the opportunity to properly document the places we hang-out. As I am currently broke, without funding to publish this book, it sits on my hard drive. I'm considering turning the entire series into a well curated website and continue to add Photos of My Friends. Does this sound like a good idea?

The goal of this project is to raise the awareness for non-verbal communication. As a designer, “YOU” are your most important product. Being capable, clever and creative are not enough. Many designers do not notice that non-verbal communication is also one of the must-have skills. When you talk, you represent the brand of you. Your body language reveals a lot of hidden information. This book demonstrates that using appropriate body language can enhance the power of influence and help one interact with others successfully in business.

Book cover design and illustration

images

description

I have been doing more painting for book covers rather than just finding stock images or doing a flat drawing in Illustrator. For both of these book covers, I designed the graphics in Illustrator to get client approval, then created a mixed media painting based on the Illustrator layout and using digital printouts. In the end, all was scanned in again and digitally manipulated.
