Of Longing And Memory

description

This project was designed to develop our understanding of visual language by creating a photographic series on a topic of our choosing and a sequence that captures the process of creating that series. For my series I decided to try to capture the emotional connections of longing, memory and nostalgia, associated with inanimate objects, in this case, a collection of Royal Doulton figurines that belonged to my grandmother. I had originally planned to photograph their faces in the style of traditional portraiture but, as I began working on the project, found that it was their body language that was much more expressive than their vacant porcelain faces.

Applied Arts Magazine

description

This is an editorial design piece created for a third-year design core class. Applied Arts Magazine held a competition for students to re-imagine their magazine. For my design, I drew inspiration from urban landscapes. This created a backdrop for editorial content about the future of creative industries.

Photos of My Friends

description

Have you ever wanted to say things about your friends that you've always wanted to say? This Summer, I photographed the people I know in Vancouver and wrote their obituaries. I also took the opportunity to properly document the places we hang-out. As I am currently broke, without funding to publish this book, it sits on my hard drive. I'm considering turning the entire series into a well curated website and continue to add Photos of My Friends. Does this sound like a good idea?

In my Mother's Absence (Axis of Light Group Exhibition)

description

This body of work encompasses a ten month photographic study of spaces that are in a state of transition, abandonment, or rebirth.  This work also coincides with the passing of my mother. In this way these images serve as a visual representation of this experience with parts one, two, and three expressing my states of being before, during, and after this trauma.

The traumatic experience of losing my mother has reshaped my physical and metaphysical approaches to the world, as well as my place within it. It has subtly redirected my photographic practice by presenting me with new subjects and ideas to explore. This work is a study of embodiment within the space left by my mother's absence.

Tahiti

description

In May 2007 I travelled to Tahiti as part of an island hoping trip towards South America. Once I arrived in Papeete I discovered how expensive local accommodation was so I decided to try and spend the night camping out in a park. After spending a sleepless night being shifted on by security guards and trying to avoid night creepers (Johns), I boarded the first morning ferry for the neighbouring island of Moorea. This is the sunset I was greeted with every day.
