Fox & Grape

description

For this project we were tasked with creating a video game based on a nursery rhyme.  I decided to choose the Aesop fable The Fox and The Grapes.  For this I set out to create a game experience that addressed the story's moral of cognitive dissonance.  The game mechanics are essentially unwinnable and player's must maintain an equilibrium else they will be punished for over acheiving.  This project intruduced me to many complicated programming concepts that I can apply to new projects going forward.

Pause + Play Toy Radio

description

The goal of this project was to select an object from one of the essays in Sherry Turkle’s book, Evocative Objects, and re-imagine it as a new object which function becomes a metaphor for the evocative qualities of its original form. I chose “The Radio” an object evocative for author Julian Beinart because of the little boy who made it. Constructed solely from scraps that the little boy found in the streets of Durban in South Africa, Beinart sees in this object the hope and imagination of the boy’s pure spirit as he sings when he carries it, imagining it is a real radio.

Dr. Peter's Center Crib Board

description

As part of a community projects course, our class was given the opportunity to connect with the residents of the Dr. Peter Center in downtown Vancouver.  Our goal was to work closely with the center to generate artwork, which may be extremely sensitive in nature, and do so in an extremely ethical manner.

In response I grew close with a group of men who sat and played clib together.  I had grown up playing with my grandparents, just as many of them had.  We shared stories laughed, and ultimately I lost our games, but gained a very rich experience.  As an offering I crafted them a custom crib board from black walnut, which was sourced from my property in Ontario.
