Vancouver Girl

description

VancouverGirl re-imagines fashion dolls by creating new products from local waste stream materials. We have three different sustainable strategies for creating value in fashion dolls: making new dolls from old ones, giving dolls makeovers to extend their life, and exhibiting unique designer doll outfits to inspire creativity.

Toy manufacturers hasten the end of life of their products through stylistic obsolescence, leaving a waste stream of durable but forgotten dolls. These can be easily restored, and used to create new fashion dolls that better reflect the interests and values of their community while supporting local crafters.

Stantec Living City Challenge entry

description

Stantec and Emily Carr teamed up to enter the Living City Challenge together - a competition that wanted us to:

  • Imagine a truly sustainable future
  • Imagine a socially just, culturally rich and ecologically restorative civilization
  • Imagine what tomorrow might hold for humanity if we rise to meet the challenges of today

To do this, we were asked to concieve a vision of a city that would be truly living, and to present out concept in a series of boards and a video. This was a multi-disciplinary team, and gave the Emily Carr participants a chance to work alongside architects, urban planners, engineers and many other professionals.

The Eco Soldiers: Don't Be a Thug, Unplug!

images

video

description

Dalen Tripp and I have created an ecological music video about unplugging unused electronics and appliances.

Please laugh and make fun of our foolish attempt at rapping. Humour is the name of the game and if it makes you unplug, then we've done our job.

Eco Soldiers, out.

Check it out, we made the newspaper!

"Compact Coastal Living"

description

Combining local, innovative materials, modern design, and "off-the-grid" energy solutions, "Compact Coastal Living" seeks to re-imagine the traditional summer cabin. At under 180 square feet, the space is divided into four distinct quadrants, but encourages users to slide open windows and doors, blurring the line between indoor and outdoor space.

Meet the Meat Guy

video

description

A video showing the negative aspects of eating meat and instead encourages viewers to eat more greens.

The vision of free-roaming animals living on green fields is very far from reality. A majority of the cows that are raised for beef lead lives in intensive confinement in dark, overcrowded facilities, called factory farms. This video encourages viewers to eat more plant-based foods instead of animal products.

A team project with Nireesha Prakash.

What do we think education is for?

It is a great honour for Janet Moore and I to present this idea to the Mayor and panel. Take a moment to think about a time when you had your most engaged and mind-blowing learning experience....

Spec print campaign

description

Proposed print campaign and rebranding for the Society Promoting Environmental Conservation, a local non-profit group that campaigns on environmental issues. An explicit focus on sustainability in the urban environment would set Spec apart from other, similar groups operating in Vancouver.

The proposed campaign uses Creative Commons-licenced images from local photographers and inexpensive, sustainable printing methods to create an identity that is visually distinct, ethically consistent, and integrated with its community.

Re-Envisioning Ritual: A Culture At Odds with Sustainability

description

Sustainability is a word that has been in our popular lexicon for over 30 years, so why is it that little has changed in that time? Re-Envisioning Ritual: A Culture At Odds With Sustainability takes new academic discourse that claims that it is our cultural values and beliefs that is creating the most resistance to a more sustainable life, not technology. Using ritualistic behaviour as a means to examine how cultural beliefs are enacted and reinforced, we analyzed how our current ritauals might be re-envisioned towards a sustainable future.

Illustrated, written, and designed in partnership with Michele Guimond.
